No walking now

I have been on vacation in Florida, stuck in my apartment because of the heat and humidity, and now I have a stomach virus. But I'll have some beauties for you in Sept or Oct. You don't want to see NYC in August. Everyone is sweaty and yucky anyway. Believe me.

Bicycles in NYC

I was walking by a "monument" for cyclers who die in the city, on Houston between Lafayette and Crosby, on the north side of the street. I did not have my camera to take a photo of this extraordinary thing. When I went back yesterday an idiot food cart was parked right in front of it. I was so angry that if I would have approached him I would have argued with him. I will make sure to take a photo of this next week, food cart or not.

Walk from work #1

I took these photos in the spring of 2007. I just wanted to transfer everything from Type pad to Blogger.

This is what I see looking out my living room window, to the left. Under the highway ramp is the East River. The buildings past is The Bronx....

This is what I see looking out of my kitchen window. Between the smaller buildings and the trees is the East River. The trees are on Randalls Island. It's mostly park area, and a psychiatric hospital. The red and blue is a toll both area on The Triboro Bridge between Queens, Manhattan and The Bronx. Looking into this horizon I can see planes taking off and landing into LaGuardia Intl Airport in Queens....

The other day I decided to take some photos of one of my walks home from work. I can walk to the corner and take the subway home. But on a nice day I can take the bus since I live in Manhattan. I also have two or three different bus routes. These are some photos from my original walk to the bus, when I used to pick Scott up from his After-School Program. I work in an area called SoHo, just two blocks South of Houston Street. Houston is the equivalent to First Street, except it's not straight across. You will see that there is A LOT of construction all over Manhattan. BUILD, BUILD, BUILD, all over town. This first one is the corner of Mulberry & Spring, the beginning of what is left of Little Italy. Cath is just around the corner!...

Cath Kidston NY, Paul Frank is on the corner...

SoHo Park is located on Lafayette and Prince Street. It used to be a parking lot. They used the parking lot as a theme....

They built this Crate & Barrel 2 or 3 years ago on the corner of Houston and Broadway, right next to a great independent film theater - The Angelika (on the corner of Mercer Street). You can see up, north on Broadway, towards 8th Street....

They built this monster right across the street (Broadway & Houston). There used to be a gas station/car wash there forever. It wraps around the block....

This is Broadway and Houston, looking north to 8th Street.

This is caddy corner to the Crate & Barrel.

Continuation...

The very far left is that new Adidas Building. That little street is Crosby Street. As you can see, Houston is all under construction. And most people don't say "Houston Street". We just say "Houston." And it's Houston, like House, not like Houston Texas....

Caddy corner to the Calvin Klein billboard is the Puck Building, on Lafayette. They always dress him up. You should see it at Christmas. The Subway stop here is called "Broadway Lafayette"....

This is a Sony PSP, billboard size. It has a working screen....

This is Elizabeth Street. There is just designer boutique after boutique popping up over here now....

This mural was painted on the wall of a restaurant on the corner of Houston and Elizabeth Street.

This is just across Houston from the restaurnt on Elizabeth. See the median? There was a story years ago, that was in the news, where homeless people used to live underground and used this exact place to get in and out....

This is where I used to park my car for $10 USD for the day when I wanted to drive to work on special occasions. I was so mad when they closed the lot and told us they were building something new. Now I have to pay $30 a day at the very least, so I never drive anymore, no matter what. I knew we were getting a "Whole Foods" sooner or later in NYC. This thing is enormous. It spans from Bowery to Christie Streets, and it's two floors. Who knew there were so many organic and green things in NY?...

There was a restoration company here, but they moved a couple of years ago. I actually think they left these pieces as a donation. This is the southern end of Second Avenue at Houston - NE corner....

This is the Sunshine Theater. It is another independent film theater located down here. It looks old, but it's only a couple of years old....

Taking this photo I am standing on Houston and First Avenue. I am facing two other intersections. Orchard Street and Ludlow Streets. There are better pics ahead. This particular intersection has a traffic camera that takes shots of anyone that leaves after the yellow light. You will receive your ticket in the mail, with the photo of you - and your car - in the act. The flash on that thing is going off all night long. This used to be in the top 3 deadliest intersections in NYC. Not any more......

Russ & Daughters is one of the oldest surviving businesses down in the Lower East Side. Almost all of the businesses down here are long gone, but not them. Martha Stewart did an episode on her old show from this store where she told a story about her father coming to the city, to this store, to buy their Christmas Eve caviar every single Christmas. She also said she bought her caviar her every Christmas. I recognized the store right away...

Orchard Street leads all the way to the east side of Chinatown. The entire street was covered with store fronts. You could find shoes, furs, leathers, wools, and various fabrics. When my mother moved us back to NY in the early 1980s What you would have found the was Lees, Levis, Sneakers, LeTigre shirts and Members Only jackets. Yes, I said Members Only. Now what you will find are galleries, clubs and bars. The residents are up in arms!!! But the owners and landlords and loving it because the drugs are at a minimum in the neighborhoods. You can't argue with that....

This is famous Katz's Deli. I have seen this place so many times on TV I lost count. It was on the opening of Saturday Night Live for a whole season about 15 years ago (I was pregnant then). When Harry Met Sally had a famous scene here. But just recently (last season aired) Hesch was on the phone with Tony Soprano will eating lunch here. I recognized it right away because I used to date someone that works here... Best sandwiches IN THE WORLD....

So now I walked back to First Avenue. This is actually "First on First." First Avenue and First Street. I am facing uptown, north. I live on First Ave, but on 122nd Street. I have a nice ride home on the bus on a pretty day. About 30 to 45 Minutes...
